Beyond the Cards: The Difference Between a Tarot Reader, a Psychic, and an Intuitive Entertainer
One of the questions we hear most often at Miles of Smiles Events is:
"Are you tarot card readers or psychics?"
The honest answer is that those words describe different things, and they are often confused with one another.
Some people think a deck of cards has mystical power. Others believe a psychic receives information through spiritual gifts alone. Still others see all forms of symbolic reading as simple entertainment.
Our approach is a little different.
We believe the greatest gift is not found in the tool.
It is found in the reader.
The Tool Is Not the Talent
A violin does not create music. The musician does.
A camera does not create art. The photographer does.
A fingerprint does not solve a crime. The investigator does.
In the same way, a deck of cards does not create a reading.
The reader does.
The cards, tea leaves, palms, handwriting samples, lip prints, jewelry, colors, and countless other objects are simply tools. They are different languages through which people express themselves.
The talent lies in observation, intuition, experience, pattern recognition, and the ability to connect with another human being.
What Is a Tarot Reader?
Traditionally, a tarot reader works with a symbolic system. The cards contain imagery and themes that have been studied and interpreted for generations. The reader lays out the cards and considers how the symbols work together to tell a story or explore a question.
Many people assume tarot is about predicting the future.
For many readers, it is actually about understanding patterns, exploring possibilities, and encouraging self-reflection.
At Miles of Smiles, we appreciate the rich tradition of symbolism, but we are not limited to a single deck or a single system. In fact, we have created more than a dozen original oracle decks based on different themes, including history, inspiration, personal growth, spirituality, and even religious verses and quotations.
We do not read tarot based on the preconceived ideas or negative associations that some people attach to it. We see symbolic cards as one of many ways to begin a conversation.
What Is a Psychic?
A psychic is generally understood to be someone who believes they receive information through extrasensory perception rather than through a physical tool.
Some psychics use cards.
Some use crystals.
Some use no tools at all.
People have different beliefs about psychic abilities, and we respect those differences. Some believe these abilities are spiritual gifts. Others see them as heightened intuition. Others do not believe in them at all.
Our purpose is not to convince anyone to accept a particular belief system.
What Is an Intuitive Reader?
An intuitive reader uses observation, life experience, empathy, symbolism, and instinct to understand the person sitting across the table.
An intuitive notices details.
They notice the colors someone chooses.
They notice the jewelry they wear.
They notice the handwriting on a page.
They notice the shape and style of a lip print.
They notice the style of home a person admires, the books they collect, the food they enjoy, the cocktails they order, and the stories they tell.
Human beings reveal themselves through their choices.
Those choices often provide clues about personality, values, dreams, fears, and life experiences.
A private investigator can often learn a great deal about a person from the evidence they leave behind without ever asking a single question. An intuitive reader works in much the same way. The clues are simply different.
The gift is not in one object.
The gift is in seeing the connections.
Reading Is Different Than Interpreting
There is an important distinction between reading and interpreting.
Interpreting often means assigning a fixed meaning to a symbol because a tradition or a book says it always represents one thing.
Reading is the art of observation.
It asks:
What is here?
What stands out?
What patterns are emerging?
What does this reveal about the individual?
No single symbol defines a person.
A skilled reader gathers many small details and looks for recurring themes.
The object itself is not the reading.
The person's relationship with the object is the reading.
We Read Whatever Language the Person Speaks
At Miles of Smiles, we interpret whatever tools are available to us.
Some are the traditional methods people think of immediately:
Oracle cards
Tea leaves
Palm readings
Symbolic objects
Others are less conventional:
Lip prints
Handwriting
Personal keepsakes
Favorite colors
Jewelry
Fashion choices
Home and decorating styles
Books and collections
Food and cocktail preferences
Hobbies and interests
And many other expressions of personal taste
We believe intuition and spiritual gifts cross many lines because people express themselves in many different ways.
A symbol on a card, the shape of a handwritten letter, a favorite gemstone, or a lifelong attraction to certain colors may all become part of the same conversation.
Our intuition gives us the flexibility to work with many different forms of expression and to interpret them from many different levels, always keeping the reading centered on the person in front of us.
The cards are not the focus.
The palm is not the focus.
The tea leaves are not the focus.
The handwriting is not the focus.
The focus is always the individual.
Every tool is simply another language through which people tell their story.
Entertainment with Heart
At Miles of Smiles, all of our readers bring their own natural gifts, talents, intuition, and life experience to the table.
At the same time, they are trained to remember the true purpose of our events.
We are there to entertain.
We are there to encourage.
We are there to create a memorable experience that leaves people feeling seen, valued, and inspired.
Our readers are taught to focus on possibilities rather than limitations, strengths rather than fears, and hope rather than discouragement.
We do not use fear, intimidation, or sensational predictions.
We do not tell people they are cursed, doomed, or controlled by outside forces.
We do not claim that any object possesses power over a person's life.
We do not encourage people to make important medical, legal, financial, or family decisions based solely on a reading.
Our goal is to help people leave our table feeling stronger than when they arrived, with a greater appreciation for their own gifts, choices, and possibilities.
A reading should never take power away from a person.
It should remind them that they already have it.
Respect for Every Belief System
People come to our events from many different religious, spiritual, and philosophical backgrounds.
Some are deeply religious.
Some are spiritual but not religious.
Some simply enjoy the experience.
We respect them all.
Our intention is never to challenge, replace, or ask anyone to compromise their personal beliefs. We do not ask people to abandon their faith, their traditions, or their values.
We are happy to use themes and materials that are comfortable for the individual or the event. For some people, that may be one of our original oracle decks. For others, it may be readings based on inspirational or religious quotations. For others, it may simply be a thoughtful conversation centered on personality and self-discovery.
Our focus is on encouragement, self-reflection, and entertainment, not on promoting any particular religious or spiritual doctrine.
The Story Belongs to the Guest
At the end of the day, we believe every person leaves a trail of symbols through the choices they make.
The colors they love.
The jewelry they wear.
The homes they dream about.
The books they read.
The food they share.
The handwriting they leave behind.
The life they build.
Those things become a language.
Our readers simply help people hear what that language may be saying.
The cards are not the source of the story.
The objects are not the source of the story.
The story belongs to the guest.
The tools simply provide a place to begin.
The talent belongs to the reader.
And our greatest hope is that every person walks away feeling encouraged, uplifted, empowered, and reminded that the most important answers have been part of their own story all along.
